The Most Powerful Reason to Resist: To Protect Your Own Soul
One of Muste’s most famous statements came when critics asked whether a candlelight vigil would actually change government policy.
His reply:
“Oh, I don’t do this to change the country. I do this so the country won’t change me.”
That’s not activism as performance.
That’s activism as spiritual self-preservation.
This line is a direct strike against the most common modern delusion:
“If it doesn’t create immediate results, it isn’t worth doing.”
Muste rejected that. He believed:
- The point of conscience isn’t success
- The point is integrity
- The point is refusing to become what you oppose
He’s telling you:
✅ Resist not because you’re guaranteed to win.
✅ Resist because surrender makes you someone you cannot respect.
When a culture is degrading, your conscience becomes a battlefield.
